Types of Deadlocks for Doors
Hook bolt deadlocks can be used on narrow storefronts made of aluminum sliding doors to enhance security and strength of locks. These locks have keys on both sides, allowing for greater flexibility.
To accurately measure for a new lock, you must first determine the door's case thickness (or backset). This is the distance between the edge of the front door and the center of latch hole.
Tubular Latch
The tubular latch is the most popular door latch. It's simple and straightforward to install, making it a popular choice for Joiners and DIY enthusiasts alike. It is available in various sizes shapes, styles, and levels that will suit any style door handle.
A tubular latch is a rectangular steel casing which includes a spring-loaded follower as well as an latch bolt (also called a striker). When you open the doors the latch retracts, allowing you to lock and close the door. When you close the doors the latch bolt swivels back and grasps the edge of the frame to hold the door shut.
You'll need to determine the maximum height of the latch on the door before you install it. Many people believe that a latch and handle should be set at a height of one centimeter above the floor. However, this isn't necessarily the case. The latch on a door knob should be placed in the middle of the rail. This is where most of the weight is transferred by the door when it's open and closed.
Once you've decided on where the latch will be placed and where it will be, mark the location of the hole in the door and the strike plate using a pencil. Drill pilot holes to secure the plate. After drilling the pilot holes, you can use a countersink to ensure the plate's backside will sit flush with the door once it's been screwed into place.
If you want a heavier-duty option than the standard tubular latch, consider selecting a double-sprung version. The door will close much more smoothly when you use this latch, as it comes with a separate spring to move the tongue. It also features a heavy-action spring on the spindle follower to ensure that doorknobs and levers return to their original horizontal position after every use.
After you've secured the latch to the door, you'll need to install a strike plate onto the frame. The strike plate is the piece that sits in the gap left by the latch when it is closed. Mark the area where you want to place the strike plate on the frame section surrounding it. Use a knife to cut a square for the plate, and then take it off.
Cylindrical Latch
Cylindrical locks are often used for doors in the interior. They are commonly found in offices and homes and are able to be used in many different applications. They are like mortise locks however they are simpler and quicker to install. They don't require a "mortise" or pocket be cut into the frame of the door like mortise locks. The hole or bore is cut into the face of the door, and they are inserted into that. They come in a variety of sizes and can be used with both knobs and levers to open and close the door.
The key difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that only a specific key is needed to unlock these kinds of locks. This is because they employ pins with different heights inside the cylinder, and springs to hold the pins in their place. When the right key is used and the pins are aligned with each other and the cylinder is able to rotate. This allows the latch bolt to retract and the door can be opened.
If the wrong key is used and the pins aren't aligned correctly, and they stop the cylinder from moving. This is why it's crucial to use only the right key when you need to enter your home or business.
The cylinder is positioned within the door's body and is connected to the operating trim by either a half-round or square extension. There are also small notch-like notches cut out of the cylinder's side that match with key notches. They are designed to align when the correct key is inserted. When the cylinder moves it will also move the latch bolt with it.
A strike plate is a metal plate that holds the projected lock latch bolt. The strike plate is generally made of heavy-gauge steel and fastened to the door frame with screws. It also has an opening for the latch bolt to engage into.
When replacing a cylindrical lock make sure to make use of the right tools to remove the old lock's handle or knob and latch bolt. Once the old hardware is removed, mark the location of the new latch bolt and strike opening on the door and frame. It's a great idea to check the operation of your lock by pressing against the latch bolt or strike plate by using your finger. If the strike plate or latch bolt is damaged or does not work properly, you should think about replacing the bolts and strike plates.
Key-Locked Latch
This type of lock is controlled with the key on the outside and a knob or lever on the inside. It is used in situations in which the unauthorized use of the lock is not an issue, such as office doors. This type of lock permits the outside lever to be in locked or unlocked and the inside knob/lever is always open to allow immediate exit. The key is only needed to retract the latchbolt once the door is closed.
The pins of a key-lock are aligned and point towards a line known as the shearline. These pins are aligned with the shearline once the correct key is placed into the lock. The plug can then be turned to release the latchbolt. If you've ever had a lock that was perfectly aligned, but the lock was not able to open or the lock would not open, one of the pins might be not aligned with the shearline.
Some locks also come with a face plate that is fixed to the door's edge. It can be decorative as well as give protection and security to the locking mechanism. It's common to see these plates on mortice locks and rim locks that have reversed spring bolts.
There is also hook deadlocks which is usually attached to the jamb and frame of the door and has a hole that guides the bolt from the cylinder to the lock. This is often utilized in conjunction with deadbolts for additional security.
The cylinder is the last part, and it holds a series pins that align the key's tip to prevent it from turning. It can be difficult to choose the best cylinder without the right tools and knowledge. To lock a front door, turn the key in the same direction that the door opens. If the door opens using the right hand, for example the key has to be turned clockwise in order to lock the door. To unlock, the key must be turned counterclockwise. This is different from other locks, like Chubb locks, which require you to turn your key in the opposite way of the way the door opens.
